The 17th Century 'Butter Cross' in the Market Place of Whittlesey, Fenland

Rescued and restored by Mr Burros in the 19th Century and by the District and County Council in the 20th Century.

Whittlesey is one of the four market towns of the Fenland District of Cambridgeshire, the others being Chatteris, March and Wisbech. (External websites will open in new window)

The town and parishes of Whittlesey in Fenland.

Whittlesey or Whittlesea is situated on a 'Fen Island' about 5 miles east of the City of Peterborough, and retains its railway station on the main line between Peterborough and Ely. The River Nene runs west to east a mile or so to the north of the town.

The name was spelt Witesie in the Domesday Book, and both Whitlesey and Whittlesey by Sir William Dugdale in his 'History of Imbanking and Drayning' (1662). It was really Whittles-ea (not Whittle-sea, 'ea' being Saxon for 'island'): the first syllable appears to have derived from the Saxon name 'Whitlingas' but we have ended up with Whittlesey which removes the argument!

Whittlesey is an ancient market town of two major Anglican ecclesiastical parishes, St Mary's and St Andrew's. The old parish of St Mary's was very extensive. There are two other smaller Anglican parishes, Pond's Bridge and Angle Bridge. Whittlesey also has a Roman Catholic parish serving the town that of St Jude the Apostle.
